To reduce its emissions, the transportation sector needs to step it up a notch!

By passing the Energy Transition Act last August, the government reaffirmed its goal of reducing France’s greenhouse gas emissions by a factor of four between 1990 and 2050, across all sectors. This trajectory is broken down by time frame and sector in the National Low-Carbon Strategy. For the mobility sector as a whole, the target for reducing GHG emissions between 1990 and the third carbon budget (covering the period 2024–2028) is 21%. In a sector where emissions have historically been on a constant upward trend, reducing the climate footprint is a major challenge. Indeed, the government’s targets are extremely ambitious, given the historical trends in vehicle fuel efficiency improvements, which are insufficient to meet the target—particularly for vehicles consuming 2 liters per 100 km by 2030.
